Production techniques for narrative theory

Character roles- Protaganist (Thor), antagonist (Thanos) etc: Non diegetic sound is like the soundtracks  MES is like costumes (Thanos gauntlet), colour, iconography (Thors hammer)  Camera work, Low angle shots to show that Thors powerful. High angle shot (Thanos) to show he's weak.  Enigma code- Where Thanos snaps his fingers and there is a cross cut, which is special effects, to where he is in a different location and he meet Gamora. This is a mystery as no one really knows what has happened. Cause and effects theory- Thanos is about to snap his fingers (facial expression looking powerful) so that makes Thor use his hammer to try and kill Thanos preventing him killing half the population.  Equllibrium when Thanos is about to snap his fingers using the gauntlet, Disruption when Thor strikes down using his hammer, regain equilibrium when Thanos eventually snaps his fingers.

Narrative theory: Claude-Levi Strauss (1958) Strauss suggests that binary opposition and the idea that things/objects/qualities that are directly parallel and opposite help to understand and fuel each other.  Narrative is understood through two opposites Pam Cook (1985) Pam Cook argues that traditional narratives “have a linearity of cause and effect, with an overall trajectory of enigma situation”. Tzvetan Todorov (1977) Conventional structure/Unconventional narratives Star Wars as the protagonist want peace but the dark side keep disrupting the hero. Non linear narratives and circular narratives have a structure that is not so straightforward. Roland Barthes Roland Barthes came up with denotation and connotation said that narratives can be understood through code. Representation theory: Laura Mulvey (1975) Male Gaze Women are objectified and represented from a masculine, heterosexual perspective.  For e.g. black widow Manuel Alvarado (1987) Racial representation Representati...

There are many theories for how genres contribute to the success of product so I am going to discuss the recent action/sci fi film from Marvel, infinity war and specifically the final scene where Thor and Thanos clash.  Firstly, I disagree with the statement the genre theory by Rich Altman (1999) which states that genres have different pleasures that entertain different audiences links to the scene as some people would feel shocked after watching the scene as Thanos, who is the antagonist, in the end prevails. In the scene they're a many editing techniques for example cross cuts for special effects when Thanos enters another place when he finds a child that he sacrifices.  Secondly, the genre theory from Steve Neale (1995) which sates that a product much match the genres conventions and must be considered unique. This scene matched the genre conventions as it is set in a place unlike earth and the character have abilities and wear costumes that no human can have. Also, the plo...

A conglomerate company is a large company that owns smaller companies. A subsidiary is company owned by a conglomerate company. An independent company is a company that isn't owned by a conglomerate company and doesn't owner smaller subsidiaries. This doesn't mean they cannot work with conglomerate companies. Crack down 3 is a product of an independent company.  Synergy is where companies promote 2 products at once and it is the most effective way of marketing. This could also be horizontal integration.  They work as a joint venture so companies can combine ideas and therefore the independent company would get more publicity as they're a working with a company that is more well known. For example Hat trick productions joined with channel 4 for more increased viewership.  A disadvantage of being an independent company is that you can't promote a product that you created across other media sectors as you don't have the subsidiaries to do so. Another disadvantage i...

Narrative essay

Narrative theories are used so they audience can understand the purpose for the story in a film or media product. The product I will be analysing to show is Batman, The Dark knight as narrative theories can be shown via the content in the film.  The first narrative theory is a theory by Claude-Levi Strauss (1958) and his theory suggests that binary opposition and the idea that people or objects can go directly parallel and opposite each other fuels each character. Fro example, Batman is the protagonist in The Dark Knight and Joker is the antagonist. This means that their goals in the movie are different as Batman is trying to keep the public safe while the Joker is out to kill.  The second narrative theory is by Pam Cook (1985) where traditional narratives have effects on he characters in films meaning when something happens or is about to happen it changes a characters actions. For example, the Joker in The Dark Knight has a woman that Batman loves in a position die and a man...
