A conglomerate company is a large company that owns smaller companies.

A subsidiary is company owned by a conglomerate company.

An independent company is a company that isn't owned by a conglomerate company and doesn't owner smaller subsidiaries. This doesn't mean they cannot work with conglomerate companies.

Crack down 3 is a product of an independent company. 

Synergy is where companies promote 2 products at once and it is the most effective way of marketing. This could also be horizontal integration. 

They work as a joint venture so companies can combine ideas and therefore the independent company would get more publicity as they're a working with a company that is more well known. For example Hat trick productions joined with channel 4 for more increased viewership. 

A disadvantage of being an independent company is that you can't promote a product that you created across other media sectors as you don't have the subsidiaries to do so. Another disadvantage is that you don have the financial capabilities of conglomerate companies. An example of this would be when sumo digital didn't have the platform to promote their games so they had to join with Microsoft.
