There are many theories for how genres contribute to the success of product so I am going to discuss the recent action/sci fi film from Marvel, infinity war and specifically the final scene where Thor and Thanos clash.
Firstly, I disagree with the statement the genre theory by Rich Altman (1999) which states that genres have different pleasures that entertain different audiences links to the scene as some people would feel shocked after watching the scene as Thanos, who is the antagonist, in the end prevails. In the scene they're a many editing techniques for example cross cuts for special effects when Thanos enters another place when he finds a child that he sacrifices.
Secondly, the genre theory from Steve Neale (1995) which sates that a product much match the genres conventions and must be considered unique. This scene matched the genre conventions as it is set in a place unlike earth and the character have abilities and wear costumes that no human can have. Also, the plot of the final scene typically results in the protagonist being victorious but in actual fact it was a the villain who won.
Thirdly, the theory from Jason Mittel (2001) which states that genres are exploited by media products so they're financially successful links to this scene at action and sci fi is one of the most popular genres so it will attract a major audience therefore making it succeed financially. During the scene there are many camera shots, especially close ups with Thanos, Thor and Gamora. Also, there is a POV shot where Thanos can see Gamora from a distance which may help the audience understand Thanos' statement.
Finally, the last genre theory is by David Buckingham (1993) and that states that genres change to society and this can be seen in this scene as people in the end may feel differently towards Thanos in the end when he sees the child that he sacrificed.
